Devon Seniors & Masters Gala

5 of the senior swimmers at Tavistock Swimming Club recently competed in the Devon Seniors & Masters Gala at Tiverton. They achieved a total of 23 medals between them – 14 golds, 8 silvers and 1 bronze.

In the 17 – 18 years senior girls age group, girls vice captain Kathryn Stacey won gold medals in all her 4 events: 50 & 100m Freestyle, 100m Backstroke and the 100m IM. Club captain Nathaniel Rookes competed in the 17 – 18 years senior boys section and achieved medals in each of his 7 events. Nathaniel won 2 golds in the 50 & 100m Breaststroke, 4 silvers in the 50 & 100m Backstroke, 100m IM, 100m Freestyle and a bronze medal in the 50m Freestyle. In the Masters gala, in the 18 – 24 girls age group, Kirsty Best claimed 3 gold medals in the 50m & 100m Breaststroke, 100m IM and a silver in the 50m Freestyle, whilst Michael Best competing in the men’s 18 – 24 age group and won gold medals in the 50 & 100m Breaststroke and a silver medal in the 100m IM. Gareth Williams won 3 gold medals in the men’s 25 – 29 age group, in the 100m Backstroke, 50m Fly and the 100m IM and silver medals in the 50m Backstroke & 200m Freestyle.

ASA Western Counties Sprint Competition

Matt Edwards and Kieran Rookes of Tavistock Swimming Club travelled to Gloucester to compete in the ASA Western Counties Sprint Competition. Kieran achieved 2 excellent personal best times in the 50m Breaststroke and 50m Freestyle in his 14 years age group, coming first in his favourite event, Breaststroke. He was 9th overall in the FINA points awards. Club captain Matt finished first in Butterfly and Freestyle, gaining personal best times in all five strokes, to finish in 3rd place overall. Annual Swimathon

On April, 5 members of Tavistock Swimming Club took part in the annual Swimathon raising money for Marie Curie. The team consisted of James Anderson, Mike Best, Matt Edwards, Nathaniel Rookes & Gareth Williams swam the 5 KM as a team event & succeeding in achieving the 11th fastest time nationally this year of 1 hour, 5 minutes & 25 seconds. The team were delighted to raise £636.50 & would like to thank their sponsors, Tavistock Swimming Club and Meadowlands for providing the venue.

ASA Timekeepers Course

9 members of Tavistock Swimming Club recently undertook the ASA Timekeepers course, run by Kathy Forward an ASA Official. The club members who participated in the course were Sophie Anderson, Chris Anderson, Harriet Edwards, Holly Gibbs, Hannah Greep, Neil Marks, Cameron McGurk, Kieran Rookes and Elizabeth Teague. They undertook a 1 hour theory session, which explained all the technical aspects of timekeeping. This was followed by a 1 hour practical session, where they timed their fellow swimmers during a club training session at Meadowlands. The course gave the swimmers a valuable insight into the role of the Timekeeper. Well done to all these new timekeepers.
